Symptoms for Detecting Spine Tumor

The symptoms manifested by a spinal tumor condition depends on various factors such as the size of the tumor, its exact location and which part of the spine is affected. The most common symptoms which patients experience are:

  • Back Pain
  • Unusual sensations which are called as parathesia
  • Problems affecting the leg such as worsening numbness; Tingling or weakness in the legs can indicate that there is a problem with the spinal cord
  • Bladder or bowel problems: This includes incontinence which is a loss of control of bowel movements or passing urine. Additionally there could be a frequent and urgent need to go to the toilet. There could also be difficulty in emptying the bladder or bowel
Medical Test and diagnosis for Spine Tumor

The diagnosis starts with a physical examination and the medical history is checked. Post the physical examination the doctor advises on the following tests:

  • MRI Scan (Magnetic Resonance )
  • CT Scan (Computerized Tomography)
  • Biopsy
  • Isotope bone scan: It is a test that shows conditions in the patient’s bones that cannot be seen by X-ray. The test identifies if there is a problem with the bone tissue. The procedure involves a very small amount of a radioactive chemical being injected into a vein. The chemical has to be given sometime to allow it to move around the body then pictures are taken using special equipment (a gamma camera). The chemical accumulates in the abnormal bone or bones so any issues in the bone tissue can be detected in the pictures.
Treatment Options for Spine Tumor

Spinal Tumor Treatment aims at the elimination of the tumor completely. However the achievement of this goal may be complicated by the risk of permanent damage to the spinal cord and surrounding nerves. The treatment options for spine tumor include:

  • Monitoring
  • Radiation therapy
  • Stereotactic radiosurgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Surgery
  • Other drugs
Spine Tumor Surgery

This surgical procedure involves:

  • Insertion of a catheter or a tube is placed through an artery in the groin
  • The surgeon directs the catheter through the blood vessels to reach the site of the tumor. Then the catheter delivers a glue-like liquid embolic agent that blocks the vessels which have been feeding the tumor
  • When the blood vessels that feed the tumor are blocked off, bleeding can often be controlled better during surgery, which in turn decreases surgical risks
  • The posterior (back) approach allows for the identification of the dura and exposure of the nerve roots
  • The anterior (front) approach is excellent for tumors in the front of the spine and effectively reconstructs defects caused by removal of the vertebral bodies
  • Multiple levels can be decompressed and multilevel segmental fixation can be performed
  • Recovery – Patient will have to stay in the hospital for five to fourteen days, depending on the case. Complete recovery can take three – twelve months, depending on the complexity of the surgery & the patients overall health.
